NSW HEALTH EXPO A SUCCESS FOR FOURTH YEAR RUNNING!
The NSW Health Expo is fast becoming a jewel in the crown of the NSW Health calendar.
The event serves as a forum for promoting and celebrating innovation and excellence within the NSW health system, making it not only an educational experience for healthcare workers, but an enjoyable and interesting one as well.
"The Expo provides an exciting opportunity for NSW Health staff to share ideas and lessons learnt, along with new technologies and advancements," said HSS Events Manager Jessica Flood.
"The practical sharing of information in this way can help improve the way in which we deliver healthcare services to our community. All those who attended this year’s Expo are encouraged to take what they have learned and apply it to their own practices."
The highlight of the Expo this year was the inaugural "Great Health Debate" with facilitator Andrew Klein and a vocal, challenging and often animated panel of:
- Deb Thoms, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer NSW Health
- Dr Nigel Lyons, Chief Executive Hunter New England Area Health Service
- Kate Needham, Executive Director Greater Metropolitan Clinical Taskforce
- Professor Cliff Hughes, Chief Executive Officer Clinical Excellence Commission
The hotly contested topic that "Patients Know Best" - with Deb and Nigel arguing the affirmative and Kate and Cliff defending the negative - was a hilarious hour of mischief and fun, while at the same time belting home a serious message about ensuring healthcare is centred on the needs of the patient.
The quick costume change of "Sister" Kate from 1970s Nightingale nurse to 2009 "scrubs" and the constant hand washing of Prof Hughes could not influence the facilitator who awarded the debate to the affirmative. But the booming applause from the 500-strong audience found both teams winners on the day.
The entire event program was well received and provided a platform for important health messages from across the health system, and a forum for learning by all participants.
